Diatomite is a chalky, sedimentary rock consisting mainly of an accumulation of skeletons remaining from prehistoric diatoms, which are single-celled, microscopic aquatic plants. The skeletons are essentially amorphous hydrated or opaline silica occasionally with some alumina. Diatomite is primarily used to filter food processing products such as beer, whiskey, and fruit juice, and to filter organic liquids such as solvents and oils. Diatomite also is often used as a filler in paint, paper, asphalt products, and plastic.

According to a new report published by Allied Market Research, titled, “Diatomite Market," The diatomite market size was valued at $1.4 billion in 2021, and is estimated to reach $2.4 billion by 2031, growing at a CAGR of 5.7% from 2022 to 2031.
Diatomaceous earth often termed as diatomite is a naturally occurring siliceous sedimentary rock. It is white, brittle and can be easily crushed into white powder. The normal composition of diatomite is 80-90% of silica, 2-4% alumina and 0.5-2% of iron oxide. Diatomite is considered to be remains of a type of hard shelled protists called diatoms. It is used in filtration aids, mild abrasive, toothpastes, metal polishes, mechanical insecticide, filler, porous backing for catalysts and other applications.
Increase in demand for filtration aid, fillers, abrasives, pest control insecticides, is expected to raise the demand. Rise in demand from chemical sector as filtration aid to increase the flow rate of the fluid and filter extremely fine particles that normally clog the filter papers. Increasing use in pesticide due to the physico-sorptive properties and abrasive like nature is anticipated to drive the diatomite market trend. However, diatomite is composed of 90% of silica, which is considered as human lung carcinogen and can cause severe lung damage due to silicosis. This is expected to limit the diatomite market growth.
The diatomite market is segmented on the basis of type, application, and region. Depending on type, the diatomite market is categorized into natural, calcined, and flux calcined. On the basis of application, the market is categorized into filtration, cement additive, filler, absorbent, and others. Region-wise, the diatomite market analysis is studied across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and LAMEA.
