According to a new report published by Allied Market Research, titled, “Electrophoresis Market," The electrophoresis market size was $2.3 billion in 2021, and is estimated to reach $4 billion by 2031, growing at a CAGR of 5.7% from 2022 to 2031.
Electrophoresis is a laboratory technique used to separate DNA, RNA or protein molecules based on their size and electrical charge. An electric current is used to move the molecules through a gel or other matrix. Pores in the gel or matrix work like a sieve, allowing smaller molecules to move faster than larger molecules. To determine the size of the molecules in a sample, standards of known sizes are separated on the same gel and then compared to the sample.
Different types of gels are usually used as the support medium for electrophoresis and this may be in slab or tube form depending on which is more beneficial. Gel slabs enable many samples to run simultaneously and so are frequently used in laboratories. However, tube gels give a better resolution of the results and thus are often chosen for protein electrophoresis. Agarose gel is commonly used for electrophoresis of DNA. It has a large pore structure allowing larger molecules to move easily but it is not suitable for sequencing smaller molecules.
Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) has a clearer resolution than agarose gel making it more suitable for quantitative analysis. This makes it possible to identify how proteins bind to DNA. It can also be used to develop the understanding of how bacteria is becoming resistant to antibiotics through plasmid analysis. 2D Electrophoresis separates molecules along an x-axis and a y-axis – one separating them by charge and the other by size.
Developing markets with improving healthcare infrastructure and high disposable income are expected to fuel the electrophoresis market growth throughout the forecast period. Electrophoresis market benefits improvements in speed, precision, and sensitivity, which is projected to boost the market growth. In addition, the rise in interest in and demand for gene and DNA research is anticipated to significantly boost the electrophoresis market share. In addition, the rise in demand for novel drugs and solutions is expected to boost the growth of the growth.
Moreover, surge in burden of cancer, bacterial infections, and genetic diseases, along with rise in investments for electrophoresis research, increasing industry-academic collaborations, growing use of capillary electrophoresis with mass spectroscopy are key electrophoresis market trends.
In contrast, because electrophoresis takes a long time to complete, it may act as a key restraint for the market because it only allows for restricted sample analysis.
The electrophoresis market is segmented on the basis of product, application, end user, and region. Depending on product, the market is classified into electrophoresis reagents, electrophoresis systems, and gel documentation systems and software. Electrophoresis Reagents are further divided into protein electrophoresis reagents, and nucleic acid electrophoresis reagents. Similarly, electrophoresis systems are sub segmented gel electrophoresis systems, and capillary electrophoresis systems. By application, the market is classified into diagnostics, research, and quality control and process validation. According to end user, the market is segmented into academic institutions, hospitals and diagnostic centers, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, and research organizations. Region wise, the market is analyzed across North America (the U.S., Canada, and Mexico), Europe (Germany, France, the UK, Italy, Spain, and Rest of Europe), Asia-Pacific (Japan, China, Australia, India, South Korea, and Rest of Asia-Pacific), and LAMEA (Brazil, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, and Rest of LAMEA).
North America accounted for the largest market share in the electrophoresis industry in 2021 and is expected to retain its dominance throughout the forecast period. This is primarily attributed to increase in government funds for detection of new proteins, rise in R&D activities of new drugs for diagnosis and treatment options, as well as surge in prevalence of chronic diseases such as cancer and diabetes.
Asia-Pacific witnessed the highest growth rate for the electrophoresis market and is expected to continue this trend throughout the forecast period, which is attributed to increase in per capita income in many countries, rise in government initiatives for improvement of the healthcare sector, and surge in focus of leading manufacturers on expanding their geographic presence in emerging Asia-Pacific countries.
The report provides a comprehensive analysis of the key players that operate in the global electrophoresis market. The key companies profiled in the report include Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc., Merck Group, Agilent Technologies, Inc., Danaher Corporation, Lonza Group, PerkinElmer Inc., QIAGEN N.V., Harvard Bioscience, Inc., and Shimadzu Corporation.
