Report Code : A14781
Glass ceramics are polycrystalline materials made by crystallizing base glass under regulated conditions. The most important driver of this market is the rise in demand brought on by the building industry's expansion. This material is widely utilized in the commercial and industrial sectors since it reduces noise and is less expensive than other options. The high cost of energy utilized in production is one of the market's major challenges. The manufacturing of these materials is affected by price fluctuations in critical energy resources such as crude oil.

According to a new report published by Allied Market Research, titled," Glass ceramics market by composition, application: global opportunity analysis and industry forecast, 2021-2030," the global glass ceramics market size was valued at $1.3 billion in 2020, and is projected to reach $2.4 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 6.0% from 2021 to 2030.
Glass ceramics are polycrystalline materials produced through controlled crystallization of base glass. Many features of glass-ceramic materials are shared by both glasses and ceramics. Glass ceramics have an amorphous phase and one or more crystalline phases, and are made by a process known as "controlled crystallisation," as opposed to spontaneous crystallisation, which is normally undesirable in the glass industry. Glass-ceramics combine the ease of production of glass with the unique qualities of ceramics. Some glass ceramics do not require brazing when used for sealing, although they can sustain brazing temperatures of up to 700°C. Zero porosity, high strength, toughness, translucency or opacity, pigmentation, opalescence, low or even negative thermal expansion, high temperature stability, fluorescence, machinability, ferromagnetism, resorbability or high chemical durability, biocompatibility, bioactivity, ion conductivity, superconductivity, isoelectricity, ion conductivity, superconductivity, isolation capabilities, low dielectric constant & loss, high resistivity, and break-down voltage. These properties can be tailored by controlling the base-glass composition and by controlled heat treatment/crystallization of base glass. In manufacturing, glass-ceramics are valued for having the strength of ceramic but the hermetic sealing properties of glass.
One of the key factors driving the growth of the glass ceramics market includes significant development in the building & construction sector. Glass ceramics are commonly utilized because of their low cost and ability to reduce noise levels in a room. Glass ceramics can also be found in tiles, cooktops, and other household equipment. In addition, higher product usage on smartphone displays and increase in smartphone penetration due to rise in disposable incomes boost the glass ceramics market growth. In addition, the aerospace industry's growing need for glass ceramics for usage in the nosecones of high-end missiles and aeroplanes is projected to continue to drive the global market in the coming years.
The glass ceramics market is segmented into composition, application, and region. By composition, the market is segregated into lithium-aluminium-silicate (LAS), zinc-aluminium-silicon oxides (ZAS), magnesium-aluminium-silicon oxides (MAS), and others. On the basis of application, it is fragmented into building & construction, electrical & electronics, healthcare, aerospace, optical, and others. Region wise, the market is analyzed across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and LAMEA.
By, composition, the lithium-aluminium-silicate (LAS) segment is projected to hold a significant share in the market, and is expected to remain dominant during the forecast period, exhibiting remarkable growth.
By application, the optics and optoelectronics segment is projected to contribute a significant share in the market, owing to high use of glass ceramics due to its better mechanical and optical properties.
Region wise, Asia-Pacific is projected to hold a significant share in the global glass ceramics market, owing to high application of glass ceramics in the defense industry, coupled with presence of high defense expenditure in the region.
The major companies profiled in this report include CoorsTek Inc., Corning Inc., Kanger Glass-ceramic Co., Ltd., Kedi Glass-Ceramic Industrial Co. Ltd., Kyocera Corporation, Morgan Advanced Materials plc, Nippon Electric Glass Co.,Ltd., Ohara Corporation, Saint Gobain, and Schott AG. These players have adopted strategies such as product launch and business expansion to sustain the competition and to strengthen their foothold in the market.
Key findings of the study
Impact of COVID-19 on the global glass ceramics market
The outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic led to partial or complete shutdown of production facilities, which do not come under essential goods, owing to prolonged lockdown in major countries such as the U.S., China, Japan, India, and Germany. It has led to either closure or suspension of their production activities in most of the industrial units across the world. Construction & infrastructure is one of the most affected sectors, owing to lockdown announced in several countries. Lockdown has affected several construction and infrastructure projects due to supply chain disruptions and unavailability of workers.
Since the advent of the pandemic, the electrical & electronics, healthcare, aerospace, and optical sectors witnessed a severe decline. As a result, there is a decrease in the demand for glass ceramics in the construction sector, thereby affecting the market growth.
