Whatman filter paper is made of cellulose fiber and high-quality cotton linters, which are treated to maximize alpha cellulose. It is used in qualitative analytical techniques to separate, determine, and identify materials. It finds its applications inside and outside the laboratory. Alpha cellulose is the most stable cellulose known for its highest degree of polymerization. The most common type of Whatman filter paper grades are 1-6, 595, 597, 598, and 602. Each grade has its own properties and applications. Whatman filter paper grade 1 is for clarifying liquids and similarly, grade 1,2,4,5, and 6 are employed in analyzing soil, testing seeds, and collecting atmospheric dust for photometric measurement. The grade 3 Whatman filter paper is designed for use in Büchner funnels. Grade 595 and 598 have quality of retaining fine particles and are widely used in particle separation and filtration of solid environmental samples for inductively coupled plasma (ICP) and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) analysis. Grade 597 is employed for the removal of CO2 and turbidity from beverages. The 11-µm Whatman filter paper is widely used for routine applications with medium retention and flow rate. The extended range of the Whatman sizes includes 10 mm to 500 mm in diameter.
The global Whatman filter paper market is expected to witness significant growth during the forecast period, due to increase in use of Whatman filter paper in DNA and protein separation processes, drug screening, cell culture, and other separations & filtration processes. Moreover, rise is healthcare-related research and development contributes toward the growth of this market. In addition, surge in biopharmaceutical research activities and urge for rapid drug commercialization are the major drivers for Whatman filter paper market. However, the market is fragmented, due to presence of large number of manufacturers of Whatman filter papers, which hinders the growth of the industry.
