Wind turbine control system market is expected to grow due to demand for renewable energy in the future. A wind turbine, or alternatively referred to as a wind energy converter, is a device that converts the wind's kinetic energy into electrical energy. The turbine control system is a digital control system that is designed to control and protect the different types of turbines including steam turbines, gas turbines, hydro turbine, and wind turbine. The operation of the control system is conducted through the electronic functions and algorithms that are incorporated in the software and hardware components of the turbine control system. A wind turbine control system reduces the loads on wind turbine components while capturing more wind energy and converting it into electricity. Wind turbine control systems are essential for the reliable, efficient and safe functioning of wind turbines. They are fitted with sensors that gather data on wind conditions, power generation, vibration, lubricants, rotor & generator speed, and other parameters, which are then sent for analysis to a computer. Wind turbine control system ensures low maintenance costs and efficient performance of the wind turbine. The wind turbine control system also guarantees safe operation, optimizes power output, and ensures long structural life of the turbine.

COVID-19 Impact Analysis

  • COVID-19 had a negative impact on the market of wind turbine control system due to the nationwide lockdown which interrupted the supply chain.
  • The demand for the energy decreased during the pandemic which caused the wind turbine market to hamper the growth and thus, affected the growth of wind turbine control system.
  • The lockdown forced the industries to be shut due to which the energy consumption decreased and the demand was reduced affecting the wind turbine control system market.
  • The major energy demanding countries such as China and India, were hit the most by COVID-19 pandemic and saw a huge decline in the energy manufacturing market like wind turbine, which eventually effected the control system market.
  • With lockdown lifted from countries, the demand for energy is increasing and thus, the market for wind turbine control system is also increasing.

Top Impacting Factor

Increased awareness about green energy coupled with stringent government rules and regulations about emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) and carbon are compelling companies to find out more effective and pollution-free energy generation methods. Wind energy is a prominent alternative for the energy generated from fossil fuels. The demand for wind turbine control systems is directly linked to the demand of wind turbines, as this system needs to be installed in every wind turbine. Thus, increasing awareness about green energy and stringent government rules and regulations are key driving factors for the global wind turbine control systems market. The rising demand for uninterrupted power, integration of control and automation technologies in systems, and increasing investment in renewable sources for better capacity utilization and high efficiency has helped in the rapid growth of wind turbine control system markets. However, the availability of cheaper alternate sources of energy is estimated to hamper the global wind turbine control systems market. Investments are made in solar power plant to generate electricity which has hampered the wind turbine market. The shift of focus to solar energy has affected the wind turbine control system. This has been due to fact that the installation cost of a solar field is less as compared to a wind-mill farm. High investments are being made in the field of off shore wind farm for power generation and thus this will help to boost the wind turbine control systems market due to its application to produce efficient performance from the wind turbine. The need for clean renewable energy for power generation will provide an opportunity for wind turbine market to grow in future and thus, will help wind turbine control system to grow as it has become an integral part of wind turbine.

Market Trend

  • In June 2019, Mita-Teknik announced the launch of a new-generation blade pitch system for use in onshore and offshore wind turbines. The Mita Pitch System is a flexible pitch solution for use in turbines of up to 12 MW, which boasts design life of 30 years. The new system is designed to effectively minimize O&M costs, reduce downtime, and improve productivity.
  • In January 2020, GE, EDF, and ESB Renewables were awarded a multimillion-dollar project for offshore wind farm project. The deal brings together collaborative expertise to flexibly deliver significant efficiencies to EDF Renewables and ESB. The project would help deliver low-carbon energy to 375,000 homes in Scotland, the U.K.
  • The National Wind Technology Center (NWTC) features two 600-kilowatt Control Advanced Research Turbines (CARTs) that test new control schemes and equipment for reducing loads on wind turbine components. The CARTs are equipped with Light Detection and Ranging systems to provide some "look-ahead" capability for the turbines, allowing them to adjust to changing wind conditions using feed forward controls.
  • In June 2018, KK Wind Solutions and Vestas announced the successful completion of APQP4Wind, the first project that used the new common standards in the wind industry. The project started with APQP4Wind kick-off meeting with customers to align expectations and quality standards. Vestas has been using the APQP4Wind project model for a Vestas specific UPS panel development project using KK Wind Solutions as a partnering systems supplier.
